Acer palamatum ‘Sango kaku’ is a slow-growing small tree species, it can take approx. 20 years to reach 4 meters in height and 0.5 m in width.
Traditionally used for bonsai, Sango kaku grows well being shaped by hand or pruned every year from the base of the trunk upwards. As explained in previous posts Sango kaku requires acidic soil with a pH range of 6–6.5. This type of soil is naturally found close to a stream bed which has remained undisturbed for decades allowing fallen leaves and other organic matter to decompose into rich nutrient-filled earth ideal for Sango kaku growth. As Sango kaku is a naturally slow-growing plant it is important to ensure Sango kaku receives sufficient water during the growing season however Sango kaku should not be overwatered.

Plant Sango kaku in a sheltered area, this will help avoid Sango kaku from being exposed to cold winds and heavy rainfall which can cause Sango kaku leaves to turn brown and fall early.
Sango kaku likes a position where it will receive plenty of sunlight throughout the day, Sango kaku requires between four and six hours of direct sun per day.
To keep Sango kaku healthy provide an organic mulch under Sango kaku foliage so water can permeate through the soil rather easily keeping Sango kaku s roots free from being waterlogged.
Acer Sango kaku can take up to 20 years to reach a height of 4 meters, Sango kaku growth rate will be dependant on the Sango kaku’s level of care and location. It is important however not to overwater Sango kaku during the summer months so it isn’t grown in overly moist soil conditions. Place Sango kaku in an area where it will receive plenty of sunlight and avoid cold winds and heavy rainfall. By following these simple instructions Sango kaku can reach its full growth potential over 20 years.
