When emerald green arborvitae are exposed to cold weather, they will go dormant. However, emerald green arborvitae needs to receive light if you want them to remain emerald green during the winter months. To “harden off” emerald green arborvitae before putting them in an unheated garage or shed, place them outside in a sheltered location for up to four weeks before leaving them out at night and bringing them back inside during the day. The emerald green arborvitae will be able to tolerate temperatures low as -10°C/14°F when fully hardened off. You can also store emerald green arborvitae in an unheated garage or shed where the emerald green arborvitae will not be exposed to sunlight until mid-March. By this time, emerald green arborvitae should begin sprouting leaves again naturally.

Keeping emerald green arborvitae healthy during cold weather is important for emerald green tree health and emerald tree survival rate. However, it is difficult to provide emerald green arborvitae with emerald tree care because emerald trees are dormant during winter. To create the best conditions for your emerald green arborvitae to stay emerald green, place them outside in indirect light or store them in an unheated garage or shed where they will not receive direct sunlight until mid-March when emerald tree care begins again.
